Elsy Menko – Book #1

The Bible – the Creation – day 1

My choice for this year’s book to serve as our theme is the all time, worldwide no. 1 bestseller, the Bible, a literary masterpiece. My quilts will deal with the fascinating story of the Creation, one quilt each for the six days of the Creation.
On day one heaven and earth were created, that which is above and that which is below, the division between light/ day and darkness/night. How to create that scene worried me endlessly until I chanced upon Bella Kaplan’s stunning picture of a sunrise over the Sea of Galilee. I immediately imagined that this is what it must have looked like (or something really close to it). She graciously gave me permission to use it as my inspiration for this quilt.

Fused, cotton commercial fabrics, tule, metallic, cotton and rayon threads, Intense pencils

  1. Good subject choice and selection of fabrics which give the piece depth. Nice work.

  2. Three of us have chosen the Bible, and the two of us have chosen Genesis. It was an excellent choice to use Bella’s photo, and you managed to translate it into fabric beautifully. I’m curious to see our visions for the other creation days. Well done.
