Els Mommers – Decay #4

ARTIST STATEMENT : DECAY #4.

When I posted my Decay #3, somebody wrote this text to fit my work:

“During the last minutes of time in the autumn of ones life….there is an open door leading to precious memories of days gone by…”

This Decay #4 is a follow-up from the previous one. The old couple, sitting on the bench, is now walking to their home-town in the distance. The old man has been replaced by an old lady who is mending  an old colorful quilt and the pictures are replaced by an old photo of my mom and her sister in their teenage years.

Wall paper is stamped and on several places treated with heated puff paste and rubb-on paint.

Doors are made from velours de panne  with painted  “wonder under” fusible ironed onto it and just like the puff paste treated with acrylic medium to protect. They are cut out with a soldering  iron.

People are coloured with textile markers , appliqued and machine embroidered.

The floor is ice dyed fabric and the little rug is from a thrift store,

Stone to hold the door is made of tyvek.

The whole piece is free motion quilted.

The process can be seen on my blog: http://kunamola.blogspot.com

  1. I love how the door in your series represents the divider between then and now. As always, the variety of techniques used is mind blowing. Great work!

  2. As usual I am in awe of the number of techniques you use to create your pieces. Love the now and then with the contrast between the two. Great addition to your series.

  3. A nice continuation of your series of doors.
    So many beautiful details.
Your piece tells a whole story that also sets my imagination in motion.

  4. The depiction of past and future is so effective in your series. Tyvek makes good stones and boulders and is so unpredictable yet yields fascinating results.

A very clever way to represent past and present or the passing of time. A lot of interesting techniques in this piece.

Your range of fabrics and techniques have brought this tableau to life. I love the way that the old lady sits stitching while the old couple make their way home. Beautiful work

  7. I like the incorporation of photos within your design and theme. Well done.

  8. As always, so many techniques to admire. The total effect is lovely. I specially like the little patchwork quilt and the 2 people walking into their future. Lovely work.

  9. So many details to behold! Love the seated lady quilting and the old couple leaving in the distance. Your story telling subjected to the many different techniques is awesome. Bravo!

  11. I am once again fascinated by the abundance of materials you use and tell the story. Perfect

  12. I always admire how one can use so many techniques in a 15” square. Very nice piece with a lot of memories for you.

  13. I love how you’ve added a photo of your mom and aunt making the composition much more personal and nostalgic. A very lovely, thoughtful and well planned design with amazing techniques. Well done!

  14. I admire all the many levels you managed to show in a such small piece, very meaningful!
