Els Mommers – Nature #4

NATURE #4 – RAINFOREST #2

This fourth quilt in the Nature series is a follow-up of my first rainforest quilt.

I wanted to make a kind of a diptych and used a background that was made in the same pot of dye as my ice-dyed piece of my first rainforest quilt.  I wanted to have the other part of the palm tree exactly matches the tree on the first piece. The same I did for the rocks  on the bottom.

On separate pieces of fabric, which I first treated with gesso, I painted a hummingbird and a bird of paradise flower, which I later fused to the background and thread painted. I made a tree trunk of 3 different painted pieces of paper tyvek, then I burned holes in them with the heat gun.

For the leaves I cut out printed leaves from a commercial fabric and fused them on. The ferns are printed with real ferns, again on separate fabric and fused. The hummingbird  is outlined with black thread.

The whole piece is hand quilted.

The whole process can be seen on http://kunamola.blogspot.com

  1. Another stunning rain forest! The way you have made the tree is very effective and I love the thread painted bird and flower. Fantastic piece!

  2. Els, this is stunning and compliments the series, I agree with Caro the tree is a work of art.

  3. Great use of color and the bird of paradise in the foreground greatly unifies everything. The little humming bird is charming. Good job!

I like how the hand quilted background give movement to the piece. Your humminbird is charming and the whole piece is very harmonious.

  5. This piece will be perfect next to #3. Clever idea to match the tree. And of course a great use of different techniques.

  6. What a wonderful idea. I love the depth and 3D effect you created to build up this piece. Amazing thread painting and hand quilting. Well done!

  7. When I look at your tropics, I can feel the warmth, smell the flowers, listen to birds singing… As always, very impressive with so many details and a wonderful texture. Bravo!

  8. A wonderfully rich and complicated rain forest scene. I can almost hear the birds and insects. Once again your attention to detail and use of different techniques has brought the scene to life. Wonderful

  9. Brilliant colours really bring the rainforest to the viewer. So many techniques and details. Wonderful as always.

  10. The perfect match to your first rainforest piece. The same brilliant colors, the same tree, the many different techniques. Lovely hummingbird and awesome bird of paradise flower. Great stitching as always. Stunning piece.

  11. I really like the variety of styles and materials you used in this work. A wonderful creation as always.
