Els Mommers – Series #3 -Door in Graffiti Wall
This time I was inspired by the photographs I took from the John Lennon graffiti wall in Prague.
Since 1980 this wall has been filled with John Lennon inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles songs.
Since my goal for the series is to explore different surface techniques I decided to use the “fresco-technique” for the wall.
White cotton is coated with gel- medium as are inkjet copies of my photographs. The copies (printed side down) are firmly pressed with an ink roller on the cotton. After drying the piece is soaked in water to remove the paper. Just a vague print is left on the fabric.
The door consists of 4 layers: – black felt, -brown velours de panne, – blue organza and on top -blue lutrador that is painted with some fluid acrylic paint: ultramarine, nickel azo gold, turquoise and black. Free motion quilted and burned with a soldering iron.
The broken glass of the window panes are made of silver silk fabric with vliesofix (wonder under) carefully ironed on top. The window frame is suede fabric, painted with inktense blocks.
Background commercial batik fabric. The whole window is covered with black tulle.
The bricks on the wall are painted with fluid acrylic paint and some more graffiti is added.
Black cotton silhouettes are appliqued and some flowers added to the basket on the bike.
Pavement is ice-dyed cotton.
The wall is free motion quilted and protected with some acrylic wax and medium gel.
Our house number 33 is added again.
