Caro Higgs – Book #4

Alice in Wondeland

My chosen book is a children’s book; Alice in Wonderland.

Alice while coming to a fork in the road sees a Cheshire cat in a tree and asks the way, since she doesn’t know where she is going the cat tells her that it doesn’t really matter. Again I am continuing with the theme of trees within my chosen book. Each time I try to create the tree in a different way, this time I cut and appliquéd the tree trunk and branches, printed a background of leaves and then overlaid wool-tops spread under chiffon for the greenery. I ended up stab stitching rather than conventional quilting because I didn’t want the stitching to dominate. For the two characters I used a silk gauze which I painted on a felt base and then appliquéd them hiding the cat in the branches of the tree and leaving Alice standing at the fork in the road. The image is based on the original illustration by John Tenniel.

  1. I like how you made the path and the insertion of the text in it. The trunk fabric is well found and the realization of the foliage is very effective. Well done!

I love the smiling cat ! excately like in the book ! The scene is lovely and the foliage of the tree very realistic : I like how you have used stab stitching to secure the foliage, it keeps dimention and texture to the whole.

  3. I really like the way you made the tree very interesting and the stitching and embroidery are also excellent

  4. Bravo, everything is as it should be, your treatment of the fabrics and fibres is very inspiring.

I love your textile illustration of Alice in Wonderland. Beautiful technique and attention to details. Great colours. What a delight!

  6. I love how you integrated the text into the path. This tree is very well done; such a different but nice technique.

  7. You’ve captured the essence of Alice’s fork in the road encounter. Your interpretation of the scene is spot on. Love all the techniques you used to create the tree and appliqués, very effective. Made me smile, well done.

  8. I am intrigued by your tree and its construction process – it appears very realistic.

I love the way that you have created the tree and especially the foliage, and Alice and the cat are well done. The tale of the fork in the road ad the cat’s answer is something that sticks in the mind as a lesson for all I think

  10. A lovely picture of Alice. I love the cat and his grin. The way you created the tree is particularly fine.

  11. Your tree is fabulous! I went back to your previous quilts and was amazed by the variety of techniques you used for trees. The situation in your quilt really corresponds with the situation in the book. Very well done!

  12. Looking at the hidden cat it makes me smile immediately. This is such a nice textile “translating” of a chapter in Alice in Wonderland. The text on the fork in the road is very well done and it is very interesting how you try to do all the trees in different techniques. I love how you did this one. Bravo!

  13. What a lovely piece, I particularly like Alice, but the cat is a fine character too. And yes, this tree is very special. How clever to stab stitch so as not to make the stitching too conspicuous.
