Bozena Wojtaszek – Decay #1

My diary of decay – part I

Decay makes me thinking both about passing and how quickly new forms are rising on the old ones. I’m fascinated by the beauty of new structures coming to life as soon as something falls apart. Whether it is wilted flower, old building or ageing brain.

In this series I want to reflect on many aspects of decay. I’m going to use a very special family treasure (a woven silk picture) as a theme connecting the whole series. So I cut it into 6 same in size fragments and to play with the smaller pieces along the way. This is going to be my personal diary of decay and I wonder how my reflections will evolve and where they will lead me.

Technique – antique and vintage fabrics, machine quilted, hand embroidered.

  1. So beautiful!
What a great idea to use the old silk picture for all six pieces.
So many beautiful details and very nice stitching, both with the machine and by hand.

  2. Bozena, I love your idea of making a personal diary. I am sure it is emotional making that kind of piece. Lovely stitching too…

  3. The thought process behind your work is really interesting as is the work itself. I look forward to the rest of the series. Great work, well done!

This is a brilliant idea to use a piece of a family treasure in each quilt and to build your series like a diary. I am sure that this will lead to a very personal analysis.

  5. Using a meaningful square of fabric in each piece is such a good idea. I’m sure it will beautifully tie all six little quilts together in a meaningful way. The overlaying images are interesting and create movement.

  6. A wonderful idea to create a diary from your six quilts using a treasured piece of silk from your family in each of them! Lovely details in this well composed piece with great stitching.

  7. Wow this is an extraordinary interpretation, love it and cannot wait for the series. bravo

  8. Great idea to use an antique map and excellent way of combining the pieces in the work. your sitchings great .

What an emotional and heartfelt subject for youth work on in this series. You were very brave to cut up the family piece but what you have created from it is very beautiful. I love the colours and stitching and I am keen to see how your series progresses
