Bella Kaplan – Decay #4

The fourth part continues the theme of archaeology. I chose a background that would give a feeling of soil, an archaeological excavation, from where I got the inspiration for the work. The vase in the center continues the previous theme, this time it has undergone restoration with the collection of fragments found around it. The vase is made of paper that I created years ago. The background is cotton fabrics.
Collage, fused, and machine quilted.

  1. It is very interesting how you are develiping the story of the vase. Using paper for the vase fragments was a great idea! Looking for the next chapter of your story, will it be?

  2. I really like the way that the jug blends in to the ‘earth’. Great choice of fabrics and the paper demonstrates the different textures. Lovely work.

  3. Your series is very fascinating!
Paper as a material for the vase works really well.
I like all the dark and muted colors you have used in the background.

The use of paper gives an interesting texture to the vase and the background fabric really gives the illusion of layers into the underground. Very interesting interpretation of Decay.

  5. This is certainly a fascinating approach to our theme. I love the high contrast nature of your quilt as well as the rugged nature of its appearance. The aged and distressed paper was a great choice.

I like the way you have shaped the pieces of the vase to show its form without actually being whole. The background fabric and stitching give a great contrast. Lovely work

  7. Love the way you interpreted the different pieces of an archeological find. The colors of the vase pieces are very common here and the background is very suitable. Quite special to have used paper, great texture! Well done.

  8. Clever use of fabrics and interpretation of a broken vessel. Colours are perfect for your interpretation.

  9. Good use of colour and materials to match your theme. The vase has clearly decayed but has been carefully reassembled.

I love the concept of restoration. And integrating handmade paper in the piece is wonderful. Paper is a fiber and works well with your subject. Great attention to details and composition. Bravo!

  11. A great background for this subject. I love you how created this vase in fragments. Using paper for this vase is a very clever idea.

  12. Love the earthy color of both the background and the decayed vase.

Using paper for the vase fragments is a clever idea. A very nice addition to your series.

  13. The background fabrics and distressed paper add so much depth and interest to the unearthing journey of the ancient vessel. Another unique interpretation of decay. Well done.

  14. Love your archeo story and the color palette!
