Bella Kaplan – Decay #3

Israel has archaeological treasures that are thousands of years old.

Recently, an ancient vase was discovered that is estimated to be 3,000 years old. The entire upper part of the vase, which is made of clay, had peeling black spots. I decided to give life to this vase. I made it from paper that I  made and on it I placed pieces of another paper, it was intended to symbolize the peeling on it.

The paper is painted with  Derwent inktense  blocks.

The background is made of cotton fabric, hand dyed.     Machine quilted.

The peeling of the second layer on the vase is very effective. I like how the background suggests various strata of soil.

I love the aging jug, the pealing layers work really well. You have managed to blend it with the background while adding colour to the piece. Lovely work.

  3. Your use of materials and techniques on the jug give it a realistic look of weathering.

  4. Interesting that you used paper for the vase, it gives a nice effect.
You have really managed to create a surface that resembles very old clay.
I also like that you have built up the background from several different fabrics. Nice quilting.

  5. A wonderfully exciting pieced background that definitely adds visual interest. This is such way to add a peeling texture to the vase. I may have to try this myself!

You have created a very interesting texture with the paper you have used. This is a really good depiction of such an ancient artefact. Great work

  7. That was an interesting technique that I always wanted to try. The peeling effect is amazing.

  8. I like the shape of this vase and you have illustrated its decay with clever use of papers. The background is a good contrast with the vase.

  9. I really love how you interpreted the peeling paint with the paper and how you placed the shards next to the vase. For me the background resembles all the different layers of the soil. Bravo.

I love your exploration of the fibre, using paper as fibre and the result is stunning. Beautiful work. Bravo!

  11. The decay of the antique vase is made clear by clever use of paper. The resulting texture is really interesting. The layers of the background remind me of strata of earth in which this vase possibly survived. Well done!

  12. Beautiful decay – layers of time and history, great work!

  13. The peeling paper is really effective to create this Decay vase.

  14. An interesting effect and clever use of paper to create the old, peeling clay vessel. The fabric choices of the strip pieced background works very well adding depth and interest. Well done.
