Bella Kaplan – Nature #5

Hula valley is a place in the upper galilee where I live. It is a site of world-wide importance for water birds and is a most important wet habitat in the Middle East. About 35,000 cranes arrive in the autumn months, and about 15,000 of them stay for the winter.  The place to watch thousands of migratory birds and birds of Israel! Twice a year, no less than 390 species of birds pass through the area. Over 500 million birds pass through Hula Valley each year. The place is full of cranes and this is the subject of my quilt

The background is a commercial silk fabric. The cranes are screen printed on commercial gray fabric, and the other fabrics are self-dyed cotton fabrics. Fused, machine quilted.

The cranes are my photography in the field.

Cranes are so elegant and you’ve reproduced them really well. I like your choice of the background silk fabric, it gives movement to the scene.

  6. Beautiful, graceful and serene composition. Lovely!

  7. An interesting background fabric is perfect for your cranes. The cranes are beautiful and I love the story of migrating birds. I am sue some of your cranes come from my country- Lithuania.

  8. What majestic birds. We never see cranes here in the UK. These have been beautifully created and set against a wonderfully colourful background.

  9. Beautiful, I love the contrast of the background with the cranes. Well done.

  10. Lovely background colours and stitching that give the cranes a sharp definition. Beautifully worked birds.

  11. Great use of a limited color pallet, while the high contrast creates visual interest. Thanks for sharing the facts about birds in Isreal.

  12. Very powerful image of these majestic birds, great job!

  13. The background enhances your beautiful cranes. Well done!
