Ann Turley – Book #5

Mock Turtle

One of the lesser-known characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the mock turtle sits upon a rock in a sea of tears where he cries because he once was a real turtle. As he cries he tells Alice about his time at Sea School and his wonderful education. His tears fall because he mourns his past life. I’ve created this creature from commercial cottons. Note that the turtle’s shell is formed from hexagons, some of which have text upon them. On the lower right of the rock you will see the words “Mock Turtle”. There is a lot more to the symbolism of this character and I invite you to google it to learn about it.

Mock Turtle

  1. I googled it! Very interesting character, new to me as I grew up far from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Your choice of fabrics, especially the one for the background, is excellent. Bravo!

I didn’t remember this caracter from Alice’s in Wonderland book either ! What a funny representation you have made !

  3. I didn’t know this character, but following your suggestion I understood the reason for the mock turtle. Great idea to use hexagons for the turtle’s shell and with writings and patterns that suggest the reason for the character’s name. Well found and executed.

  4. A strange character indeed, I really like the way that you have constructed him in hexagons. Great fabric choice.

  5. What is there not to love about this quilt, love the background and the use of patchwork for the turtle’s shell. Bravo

  6. I too had to research it, lol. Another whimsical character and composition to add to your fun series. Clever use of fabric and techniques. Well done.

  7. I love the way that you have created the shell of the mock turtle which I think is a very deep and interesting character in this story. The background definitely reminds me of tears falling and is beautifully worked.

  8. Such a great idea to use hexagons for the turtle. A great use of fabrics. Nice!

  9. I love the story you tell and execute perfectly. I don’t remember this character and it’s nice to meet her here.

  10. Don’t remember this character either, but then again at the time back in Europe we weren’t really educated with Alice’s story. Quite nice how you have made his shell with those texts representative of what he sings. For the background you could not have found a better fabric and the quilting of the tears is beautiful.

  11. A great picture of the character. The background abric is ideal and the shell of hexagons works so well.

Great whimsical quilt. I love the character, such a personality. Great choice of colours and composition. Bravo!

  13. After researching I understood why you gave the turtle the head, hooves amd tail of a cow. You really made the poor turtle into a funny character with your beautiful choice of bright colors and fabrics for the shell against the grey background. Well done.

  14. I really admire your eploration of Alice going deeper and deeper, very interesting piece!
