Sonia Ruiz – Time #2

In this art quilt series I will explore the passage of time using the 25 ton Aztec sun calendar and Frida Kahlo’s life journey. Each quilt will represent a different time or stage of her journey, and the enduring legacy of her art.

This second quilt represents Frida’s physical suffering following the 1925 bus accident that left her with a shattered spine, pelvic injuries and permanent chronic pain. The broken sun calendar depicts the feeling like time stood still during her unimaginable physical pain.

Materials: commercial fabrics, hand dyed calendar fabric, gauze, red ribbon, raw edge appliqué, free motion quilting, thread sketching, photo transfer of Fridas “The Broken Column Painting (1944)”

Gorgeous quilt. I love the composition, the choice of fabric and the story you tell through the piece. Great attention to details and I love the butterfly details symbolizing freedom and hope. Bravo!

  2. Simple yet elegant and powerful depiction of her dramatic story, well done!

  3. Beautiful quilt where the composition, design elements and fabrics work together to tell the story and make us feel the pain. The texture of Frida’s skirt is amazing!

  4. It’s hard to imagine the pain she went through – and how different medical care would have been today.
A very moving piece. All the details are so beautiful. I especially like the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This piece really impresses me.

  5. I was immediately attracted by Frida’s skirt and the movement you gave to it ! Frida’s story is always moving.

  6. A great illustration of a difficult story. I like the texture of Frida’s skirt and I like the butterflies.

A sad story that is beautifully illustrated by the way that you have placed Frieda in the broken calendar. Your stitching and choice of fabric is great. Well done
