Els Mommers – Time #1

Artist statement: TIME #1:  EGYPT   1333- 1323 BC

For this year’s series on the theme of Time I have chosen to make quilts related to ancient art from countries we visited years ago.

My first country is Egypt . Visiting TIME: 2005

I made a rubbing of a piece of art we bought in Egypt but didn’t survive the trip.

The image probably comes from images in the tombs of the valley of the Kings in Luxor.

The rubbing is done on some very light ice dyed fabric. All the contours are sewn with the machine and some parts painted with black and gold acrylic paint.

It is sewn onto a piece of rusted fabric

The background is quilted with a feather pattern and echo quilting.

ORIGINAL ARTWORK.

  1. Great subject choice and great way of transforming Egyptian motifs into fabric. Love the rich texture of this piece, well done!

  2. I love your subject choice and this is a great beginning! The Egyptian motifs lend themselves to interpretation and you have produced a really interesting piece. Great colours and stitching, well done.

  3. It is a great start for this journey through time !

The rubbing is very effective and the rusty colours you have chosen work perfectly with the theme. Bravo !

  4. Your piece carries a strong sense of history.
I look forward to the continuation of this series!

    Beautiful piece of art. Amazing.

  5. Egypt really feels like the beginning of civilization and I am already curious about what will follow. As always your quilt amazes me with a variety of techniques. This time you added one more that I have never heard from you before: rubbing. The texture is amazing.

  6. Exquisite the Egyptians were great scholars of time. Great choice of colours and fabrics. Bravo

  7. The way you’ve incorporated the Egyptian rubbing makes this feel like a modern day hieroglyphic, it beautifully captures the passage of time. Stunning, a great start to your series.

gorgeous rendering of ancient art. Such great techniques to make it look ancient. I love it. Beautiful attention to details. Bravo!

  9. The choice of subject is interesting and it is intriguing what will come next. As always, perfect work. The colors are excellent.

  10. So we’ve both chosen Egypt for our first depection of time. Hieroglyphics were a form of communication as well as artwork. Your color choices are spot-on and I love your quilting.
