Ann Turley – Time #1

HIEROGLYPHICS

For our 2026 theme of Time, I have chosen communication. This first block shows two images I photographed at Al Karnak, a temple in Luxor, Egypt. The rought-cut edges are a reference to the papyrus substrate, Materials used were batiks, hand-dyed fabric and a commercial cotton. It was machine quilted with a stylized papyrus pattern.

The honey bee and the Ankh are both common hieroglyphs seen at this temple site. The bee proclaims the title of King of Upper and Lower Egypt while the Ankh on the right is a symbol of life. The Ankh also shows a relationship between life, immortality, death, and the rituals of death.

Detail iof the honey bee.

I love the way you made the background with the quilted papyrus. Great concept and attention to details.

  9. How funny that we both choose Egypt for our first quilt in this series, although you are probably going in a different direction. I am very much looking forward to the rest of your series. Love your rough cut edges and the quilted papyrus. Very well done.

  10. For me it is interesting to see works that touch on Egypt. A place I visited several years ago. Very interesting work, the integration of the object with the background.

  11. The fabric really does give the impression of old papyrus and the images you have used to depict the hieroglyphics gives the feel of faded paint in the ancient tombs. A great choice of colours and stitching

  12. This very definitely gives the feeling of the symbols that can be seen at Karnak. The simplicity of your design is lovely and the colours and stitching perfectly reflect the original source.
