Sonia Ruiz – Book #5
The Burrito Boy by Jane Tenorio Coscarelli
For my 5th challenge I’ve chosen the book “The Burrito Boy”. In each of Jane’s bilingual books she would include a story, a recipe and a quilt pattern. This book includes 2 recipes for Beans of the pot and refried beans. The burrito quilt pattern is made up of 1/2 square triangles.
The Burrito Boy is a story about a little boy, Juan, who was excited to go to his first day of school and asked his nana to tuck him in bed the night before like a burrito, she did and she called him her little burrito boy. With the excitement of the activities of his first day of school, it was finally lunchtime and as they all started unwrapping their lunches, his classmates made fun of his burrito lunch and started calling him burrito boy. Juan began to dislike school, his lunches and even his nana wrapping him like a burrito at bedtime. To make life better for Juan at school, his grandmother decided to make a special treat for all his classmates, burritos. They all loved the smell and taste of the burritos and they stopped calling him Burrito Boy. Juan was happy and thanked his nana for what she did and asked her to continue calling him her burrito boy.
I used commercial fabrics and continued the use of black thread to give the feel of illustrations. I free motioned quilted shapes of books, a school, beds and burritos to represent the story over the miniature burrito quilt. Since September is Mexican heritage month and the celebration of Mexican Independence was on September 16, I added the green, white and red ribbon to symbolize the Mexican Flag, and of course the butterflies in honor of my dear friend Jane.

This is a great addition to your series. I like how the border fabric coordinates with a zig zag quilt pattern. Lovely.
