Maryte Collard – Book #6

The End of the World

This is the second quilt inspired by Haruki Murakami’s book Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. After his death the main hero finds himself in the strange town called The End of the World. The town is surrounded by high walls and unicorns are the only creatures that can go in and out of the town. Many people live a comfortable life but they don’t remember their past.

Just after entering the town, the hero’s shadow gets cut off and day after day it gets weaker and weaker. At the same time the hero’s memory fades until he loses his identity. The identity transfers to a unicorn and for a while it stays there until the winter comes, the unicorn dies, and the dream reader reads the unicorn’s skull. Before that there can be moments of connection between both worlds and the world of living and dead can have breef moments of encounter.

It is much more complicated in the book and there is much more to the story that is considered to be one of the best Haruki Murakami’s books.

I used my own hand dyes and a commercial batik for the wall. Fused applique, machine quilted. Again, I forgot to embroider the text before quilting.
