Kaylene Maalste – Nature #6

The inspiration for Nature #6 is the numerous shells that I find at the beach. I used a poem to compliment the shells – “A seashell is never empty, It is filled with many things, holds the sounds sounds, Of crashing waves that mermaids sing” author unknown. The materials are a linen cotton background with hand dyed organza and the shells are outlined with chenille yarn, hand embroidered with embroidery cotton.

The economy of color gives your work a great softness. I like the poem written tone on tone on the background, it reminds me of when we were children and we wrote in the sand with a stick.

  3. I love the natural colors and how you included the poem.

  4. Such a beautiful and delicate composition. Love the tone on tone and meticulous hand stitching. Lovely end to this series. Bravo!

  5. With so little means you have achieved a great result. Truly les is more in your piece. Your hand stitching is just wonderful.

  6. The neutral colors are beautiful in their simplicity. It has a calming sense to it. Very nice.

  7. This is a very gentle piece. The colours and stitching create a lovely, calm image. A lovely finale to your beach series.

  8. The colours and fabrics you have used are so fitting for a beach scene. I like the way that you have outlined the shells and stitched the words of the poem into the sand. Great work

  9. Delicate composition, the monochromatism reflects the colour of the sand and the embroidery work is impressive. Well done.

Beautiful choice of fabric giving that feel of the tide of the sea. Perfect embroidery to give depth and volume to the shells. They look like sculptures. Beautiful!

  11. I love the use of bright colors and the hand sdtitching you do in this work. great.

  12. The colors are so effective in this beautiful piece, love the use of ton sur ton. Excellent choice to use chenille yarn to outline the shells and the echo stitching also helps to make them stand out. Very well done!

  13. Love the effect you created with your monochrome colours. A great idea to hand stitch the poem, as if it is written in the beach sand. Bravo.
