Joan Brailsford – Book #5
The Painted Tipi
I am continuing my series based on books concerning Native Americans, by depicting a Tipi and adding an abstract design based on the tipi form. I have based this piece on illustrations of tipis in the book “The North American Indian: the complete portfolios“, by Edward S. Curtis, though I have deviated slightly from my previous work in the series by adding a more modern abstract element.
My work is based on painted tipis in a camp of the Piegan tribe. Often the tipis are symbolically painted, and in this case the painting is imitative of a tipi seen by the owner in a vision. Because the illustrations in the book are all sepia photographs there are no clues as to the colours used, so in this case I have used a little artistic license and have used colours which I thought may work.
The tipi is made from a fairly rough canvas painted in acrylic, following the pattern in the book’s illustration, and I have included couched threads underneath the tent and extending beyond it, to represent the wooden poles that form its structure. I have purposely left the main tent unquilted, so that it stands out from the heavily stitched background. I have created an abstract background based on the tipi form. For this I have used triangles of transfer printed sheer fabric in a fairly random order and overlapping in some cases, to create the feeling of a large number of tipis, that may haver been in the same campgrounds for many years past. I further overworked the background by adding triangles of straight stitches to form the quilting, to give a further ‘ghostly’ echo of previous tipis.

Detail view:

Your background is truly impressive and it really looks like shadows of previous camps and previous lives. Your quilt is absolutely delightful.
The quilting on the sheer fabrics is amazing ! I like the shadowy effect given by the triangles of sheer fabrics; it really gives the illusion of a lot of tipis in the distance.
Magnificent backdrop that highlights the tipi, amidst the memory and imprint of Native Americans. Great work. Bravo!
I love it, from the outset it looks so simple but on closer inspection there is so much detail. A great tribute to the Native Americans way of life. Well done.
A great design incorporating abstract and reality. bravo
Love the incredibly textured background you created, it brings your tipi forward and gives depth. Lovely composition, well done!
Impressive use of color and shape. I particularly like the background.
I love the big tipi and his colors. The background is so great with the tipi shapes and the way you quilted this whole piece.
Very impressive background, the dense hand stitching (?) gives such a beautiful effect. You have succeeded in creating that illusion of many tipis surrounding the main one, the bright colors of which I love. Bravo!
A beautiful quilt. The big tipi is detailed and so well constructed. The background colours and stitching add extra depth to the whole piece.
I love your play with the triangles, bringing more importance to the tipi. Beautiful colours and composition. Bravo!
I really like the background and the stitching, the colors are very subtle and complement the Tipi.
Your background printing and stitching is incredible. You really get the suggestion of a lot of tipis. The large tipi stands out beautiful against this background. The couched threads for the wooden poles is a nice creative solution. Bravo.
Again – meaningful and visually pleasant work!
