Helen Hazon – Book #1
Books #1 - Sense and Sensibility
Inspiration – my almost lifelong love of Jane Austen’s novels.
When I was about 11 years old I began reading the novels written by Jane Austen. I suppose this was in school English Literature lessons. Since then I have read the 6 complete novels many times over – they are like old friends and bring comfort and calm when needed. I find the stories entertaining and there is a lot of humour in the way they were written.
I have decided to focus on one novel for each of the quilts in this series and to present them in the order in which they were originally published. The fabrics and colours will, I hope, reflect those in use in the early 19th century. I will be including a section of diamond shapes – applique – as a reference to the patchwork coverlet made by Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra.
The first quilt’s subject is Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811. I have used hand embroidery with raw edge applique and machine stitched words – names of some of the main people and places in the book.
All fabrics are cotton. Hand embroidery is in cotton and machine stitching is in rayon.

Immaculate as usual! Great book choice and I love the way you have executed this piece so neat and so beautifully stitched. Well done!
Jane Austen, apart from the film Pride and Prejudice, I don’t know her work. In our school programme, English literature is not included apart from a few small snippets in the optional English lessons. You did an impressive stitching job. The choice of drawing, colours and writing perfectly reflect Jane’s era. Well done.
A wonderful serene quilt, love the subtle colours.
Very Austeen indeed. Not my favorite author but I see her vibe in your piece, great job!
What a good choice ! I think I read all her books, watch the movies several times and even visited her house in the South of England ! Your quilt reflects the quiet life she had and her delicate personality.
Really clean minimalistic design and wonderful hand stitching, love it!
I also love Jane Austen’s books. I read them all. Nice choice. And I really like your hand stitching and the choice of colors .
A well loved author and book first tasted during the English literature lessons in high school and reread many times. Your quilt exudes innocence and purity in its lovely colors and the exact and perfect execution. Very impressive, can’t wait to see your next ones!
Your choice of fabrics and colour palette are perfect for the subject and age in which the books are set, so gentle and restrained. Your stitching, as always, is beautiful and the idea of including names and places from the book is very clever. Great work
Your embroidery is beautifully done and having never read Austin’s books, it was exciting to see the main characters memorialized on your quilt.
Your fabric choice reflects the time the book was published. Very nice stitching, of course!
This piece really reflects Jane Austen’s time era. Beautiful choice of fabric and I am always so in awe of your beautiful and precise stitching. Well done.
Beautiful choice of fabric and impeccable embroidery. Bravo!
You’ve captured the true elements that show the ideas of practicality and romanticism (sense & sensibility). It’s delicate, well executed and meticulously stitched. Bravo!
