Helen Hazon – Nature #4

Animals

Inspiration – the role of insects in pollination and their importance in global food production.

In the second of my 2 quilts about animals in Nature I have stayed with the honey bees and their work as pollinators. I have added in some other examples of insect groups that are also very important pollinators – butterflies, moths and beetles (shown here are the red admiral, the cinnabar moth and the ladybird). There are also images of a few fruits that we would not have in such large amounts if insects did not pollinate the flowers.

I have tried to show how the bee, when foraging for nectar, picks up a covering of pollen grains from the flower. When it visits another flower some of this pollen is dropped. If the dropped pollen lands on a receptive stigma then the flower’s ovules can be fertilized and will develop into seeds.

The quilt is made from cotton fabrics. I have used Inktense pencils and rayon embroidery threads.

Precise and harmonius ! Very well documented with the eye of a scientist !

  4. And again I got lessons about insects in the nature. I am very impressed with your attention to the smallest details. The background color is excellent, the hand stitching is admirable.

  5. When I look at your quilts what always strikes me is precision and your ability to fill such a small space with a lot of details and information. Your stitching is always superb. Bravo!

  6. Love all the information you have beautifully depicted in this quilt and the movement of all the little pollinators fluttering around. Your stitching is fabulous and I really like the detail of the pollen grains on the bee’s body. Well done!

  7. I love the way you have told a story with the travels of the bee. Your depiction of the insects, flowers and fruit is wonderful, and of course the stitching is beautiful. Great work

  8. Thanks for your interesting lesson on pollinators and food production so beautifully depicted in your utterly precise quilt. How I admire your stitching (computerized meandering??) and all details in this work! Gorgeous.

  9. I also admire the precision of your work and the attention to detail that you have used. It is a lovely quilt.

  10. What a wonderful way to show us how important bees and other insects are for the foodproduction. I love your detailed work, the beautiful hand embroidery and the accurate free motion stitching.

  11. Excellent work and well executed down to the most minor details. Your science book series is fascinating. Bravo!

  12. Where would we be without insects! A lot of details and very well executed.
