Genevieve Guadalupe – Decay #2

Following with my former concept of decaying flora through the seasons, my second art piece showcases the decaying leaves still present in the very early spring, where the new hints of fresh green grasses start to sprout. Notes of subtle light pinks maybe evoking the very first little flowers on the naked branches…

Materials and technique: repurposed cotton fabrics, tea bags, real leaves preserved, printmaking ink, watercolours, inks, cotton batting, poly thread, embroidery floss, cheese cloth. Dry point printmaking, preserving of leaves, machine pieced, machine quilted, hand embroidered.

  1. This is exactly how my garden looks right now.
Very beautifully made. I am fascinated by the different materials you have used.
I really wonder if the leaves are real leaves or if they are printed?

I have understood that you used preserved leaves, how do you preserve them ? delicate and of a great softness.

I really like this and the way that you have managed to use real leaves. There is so much information and the hand stitch adds another dimension to our work. Well done!

  4. It is interesting how did you manage to quilt over the real leaves? Even if decaying, they are still very vibrant and make your quilt full of life.

  5. Getting spring and decay into one piece is true art. Lovely work!

  6. Such a delicate and ethereal design. Just beautiful!

  7. Wonderful, great use of your skills and do like the idea of using real leaves.

A very delicate and evocative design that allows the beauty of the decaying leaves to shine through. I like the touches of pink that hint at new life which happens in the cycle of decay. Beautiful work

  9. I really admire the use of preserved leaves. Curious to know how you do it. The colors are excellent.

  10. A very gentle design showing the lovely shapes of the leaves even as they decay. As others have said, the use of preserved leaves is genius…but how are they preserved so that they remain flexible enough to be stitched?

  11. Very special quilt with the preserved decaying leaves and the little hints of pink. Your stitching is, as always, meticulous. Bravo.

  12. Your use of real leaves is innovative and daring, as is the inclusion of tea bags as a substrate. That subtle use of pink adds visual interest. Very nice composition.

  13. How daring to use real leaves! Amazing that they withstood the quilting. Love the contrast between the real leaves and that delicate print of a leaf. The different materials make for an interesting background. The inclusion of the pink as a harbinger of spring is so effective. A most lovely piece.

  14. Great capture of early spring when we expect new life while the remnants of old one are still present.
