Els Mommers – Nature #6
UNDER WATER: SEATURTLE
The last quilt in the Nature series is connected to the seahorse quilt from last September. This time it is a sea turtle. When snorkeling or diving in the ocean around Saba you often see this turtle gracefully passing by and even sometimes come closer to get a better look of you.
The background is the same painted Wonder/Under fusible that I tore in strips and fused to a cotton background, as I did for the seahorses. For protection it is covered with acrylic wax and a layer of light blue organza.
The sea turtle is drawn on a piece of cotton and colored with inktense pencils and fabric medium.
A friend sent me some pictures from beautiful sponges that he made while diving here. I just wanted to try to get the texture from the sponges on fabric. I drew them and carefully covered them with a palet knife with colored puff paste, heated it and sealed it with gel medium.
Turtle, sponges, rocks and waterplants are all fused to the background and stitched on with monofilament thread
The whole process can be seen on: http://kunamola.blogspot.com

Lovely work as per usual! The colours are wonderful and there are so many small details. Great final in the series!
Wow I thought I was in an aquarium. This is fantastic you keep coming up with the most vibrant and interesting quilts of your land/seascape. Great idea to tear up the fusible wonder under as it gives perspective to the background. The sponges talk of your attention to detail. Bravo
I am always in awe with your colourful world !
The sponges are so realistic, it must be even better in reality.
So nice you used the same technique for your background. The turtle and the sponges are great!!!
Wow! The amount of detail you’ve managed to include on the quilt is amazing. The turtle looks quite real. Very nice!
Unmistakably Els! As always I am amazed by the techniques you use to create your work. This is a lovely and colourful conclusion to your series.
What a wonderful undersea world. I love the way that you have used the texture paint to depict the sponges which stand out beautifully in the foreground. Lovely work once again
