Chantal Guillermet – Book #5

Les Saltimbanques (Acrobats) is a poem by Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918). It refers to the traveling circuses that used to roam the countryside, bringing people a little dream and perhaps the only distraction from their hard life. In a 1901 painting (Harlequin and his companion), Picasso depicts a circus performer wearing a garment made up of lozenges.

Dyed fabric for the background, non-woven with sequins for the path, with words chosen at random from the poem quilted on top. The figures are fused and reworked in free-motion quilting.

I used a stencil and metallic paint for the diamonds. They are linked by embroidery representing the paths taken by the acrobats.

Hand-dyed cotton, commercial fabric, linocut, rayon threads, metallic threads, non-woven fabric, acrylic paint.

Saltimbanques (trad. Anglaise)

Acrobats

The strollers in the plain

walk the length of gardens

before the doors of grey inns

through villages without churches

And the children gone before

The others follow dreaming

Each fruit tree resigns itself

When they signal from afar

They have burdens round or square

drums and golden tambourines

Apes and bears wise animals

gather coins as they progress

  1. Your style shines through all your quilts and through this one as well. I love how the messages are encoded with lines and shapes just like in poetry they are lurking between the lines. Well done!

  2. Your style and color palette is recognizable and captivating. Another great addition to your series. I really like your miniature. Bravo!

  3. A great addition to your series, the path works well with the text embedded into it ,as do the coloured diamonds. Lovely work.

  4. A lovely combination of hand and machine stitching. I like the colours you used for the diamonds. The miniature is great again.

  5. Fabulous abstract interpretation. Love the design and concept portrayed with use of shape and figures.

  6. Your interpretation and symbolism of the poem depicting the traveling entertainers always on the road, lonely and constantly moving is well done.

  7. I like your colour palette and the shapes you have used really reflect the harlequin costumes. I like the way that the quilting lines refer to the paths travelled by the entertainers. Well done

  8. I like the lovely gentle colours and the diamond shapes. The quilting is clever but my favourite part is the single illuminated letter in the foreground.
