Chantal Guillermet – Book #3
Chanson d’automne
« Chanson d’automne » is a poem by Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), a tribute to autumn and its romantic atmosphere.
I used sheet music, crumpled in the manner of the Japanese Konnyaku paper, to make the leaves. They were then fused with mistyfuse on the fabric and free motion quilted.
Crumpling the paper in this way makes it very soft and easier to sew.
They were then colored with Markal paint sticks and waxed with acrylic wax to make them more resistant.
As with previous quilts, the first letter of the title was printed using a linocut.
The text of the poem is written continuously across the top.
Hand-dyed cotton, batik, linocut, acrylic paint, paintsticks, acrylic wax, rayon thread.
Autumn song
With long sobs, The violins of autumn,
Wound my heart, With languorous, Monotony.
…………………….
…………………..
And I go, where ill winds blow,
Buffered, to and fro
Like a dead leaf
Translation Richard Stokes.

Great colour palette as usual; this piece is far more elaborate than it looks at first, great interpretation.
Your design, colors, materials and techniques truly reflect the autumn atmosphere. Using crumpled music sheets for autumn leaves gives me shivers of thinking how everything fades away in autumn- the music and the leaves. You are a genius, Chantal!
