Chantal Guillermet – Nature #3

DESERT # 1 : Petra

The theme for my second Nature pair is Desert with the aim of using a whole series of fabrics that I have painted with ochres.

I was inspired by a photo taken in Jordan on the site of Petra when walking through the gorge where the rock walls were so high that only a small square of blue sky was visible when looking up. The sun was shining on the rock, highlighting the different layers and the colour of the stone.

I started by outlining the different areas on my photo by following the colour of the stone. Then I worked in reverse appliqué with the monofilament thread as for Forest N° 1 and 2.

Once the piecing was finished, I tried to delimit the light and shadow areas with the quilting and with the help of the original photo. To finish I reworked some parts with the inktense blocks.

  1. Beautiful capture of the rocks, I love the way you have interpreted the play of colour and light. Stunning quilt.

I love the colours and textures of the rocks you have created and the time you have taken to delimit different areas and add inktense colours has really paid off. Lovely work

  9. Beautifully realistic use of color with your painted fabrics.

  10. I remember walking several times through this gorge and been taken by the beauty of it. Your quilt really represents the way the light is trying to peep into the gorge and highlights the many different colors of brown. Your ochre fabrics are doing it so much justice. LOVE it.

  11. This really reminds me of our visit to Petra. You kept the beauty and colors of the rocks in your piece. So good to use the ochre fabrics!

  12. You didn’t chose an easy subject! I admire how you succeeded with your interpretation of the many colored rocks of the gorge leading to that stunning place. Great to have found such appropriate use for your ochres! And that little bit of blue sky made me smile. Lov’it!
