Caro Higgs – Decay #6 – The woods decay…

Inspired by dead forests and winter.

This piece presents an overview of decay which is a crucial part of the natural world. The idea of the approaching winter in a forest of dead trees where the colours are monochrome, shapes and forms create patterns and decaying leaves blow in the wind. Forests are often approached from fields where there are snatches of colour. The opening line from a poem written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Tithomus, describes the scene.

Old linen sheeting coloured and printed with earth pigments, words written with a cola pen and printing ink, hand and machine stitched. Leaves printed on silk organza with fabric paint attached to dyed silk organza with misty fuse and appliquéd.

  1. Very sad forest, the essence of winter in the woods.

  2. Great design that depicts your thoughts on nature. Wonderful choice of fabrics and techniques.

  3. It is a very sad picture but I love the textures and 3D leaves.

  4. I always think that the last throes of the forest are somehow magical, even though the bareness may seem stark. The skeleton of the forest is visible at last and you can see the power within each tree. This piece is very atmospheric depiction of that decay. I love it

  5. Undoubtedly the colors of decay.
I can almost smell the dead leaves and plants.
    Nicely done. Love the leaves!

  6. Definitely a wood in Winter. I can almost smell the decay portrayed so well here. Great colour choice and some interesting techniques.

  7. A sad but interesting story. I love the choice of color in its various shades and the amount of technique you put into the work. Excellent

  8. You depict the atmosphere of the forest beautifully ! Even if it is tone on tone I love the color of the pigment you used; and your leaves are very realistic. Bravo!

  9. You’ve effectively captured the stark and desolate atmosphere of the forest. The limited palette enhances the sense of dreariness and stillness. Lovely end to your series. Well done.

Great colours and feel to the quilt. I specially love the bottom part with all the needle work. Beautiful attention to details. Bravo!

  11. Intriguing use of a monotone color pallete. An autumn and winter forest seem to have so little interesting features, but to have managed to make it glow.

  12. Beautiful depiction of a dreary winter forest. Love the leaves swirling in the wind. You have found the perfect line of poetry to accompany this lovely piece! Well done!

  13. This is a forest on a sad, dark winter day. The leaves look so real. Great!.
