Caro Higgs – Book #1
The World of Pooh A.A.Milne
After much deliberation and a total change of heart I decided to choose children’s books because I wanted a cohesive thread running through all my six books. As much of my work is nature related I have chosen to have the subject of trees as the common dominator.
The inspiration of the first piece is the World of Pooh, illustrated by E.H. Shepard, a book which I loved as a child, my mother also loved it. The last day I spent with her was the day that we moved her from her retirement home to a home specialising in dementia and while her affairs were being moved I read her the beginning of the book which is the story of Winnie the Pooh trying to collect honey from the bees except they were the wrong type of bees……
I used cotton which I painted as the sky, then I stencilled some ‘leaves’ before appliquéing the tree, the trunk is an old sheet and the branches a finer cotton. Once machine stitched I added another layer of ‘leaves’. The blue sky is lightly hand stitched, my bear is dyed wadding , the ballon a scrap of sari silk and I used a basic string. The rather odd bees are beads. There are two quotes from the book, the first chain stitched in the sky, “How sweet to be a cloud, Floating in the Blue” and the second chain stitched in the bottom left corner, “Isn’t it funny, How a bear likes honey? Buzz, Buzz, Buzz, I wonder why he does?”.

Nice choice, children’s literature. I like the idea of tying it to trees. The creation of the trunk, branches and leaves is really successful. The balloon string is the icing on the cake. Bravo.
Beautiful work and your interpretation of the book. Great idea to have a motif throughout your coming quilts.
Great execution of this evergreen story, I recognized it from the first sight!
And the tree is just splendid!
Like Bozena I recognized Winnie the Pooh immediately ! I like how you have built the tree, it is beautiful ! your funny bees are very effective !
Yes, it is easy recognizable but I also love the moving story behind your quilt. Thank you for sharing it with us. I think we all have books that made a mark in our lives.
This book is also one of the books my children grew up with.
Excellent execution of the tree and the leaves. I really like the way you expressed the letter.
My children grew up with this book as well. I still have the copy from which I read to them (it’s falling apart). Very moving and beautiful story behind the quilt. To me Pooh and the balloon stand out, what an idea to use wadding! Great to chose trees as your common theme. Lovely work!
I love your choice of book and the fact that it means so much to you. The balloon adds the perfect burst of colour and gentle comic effect that Pooh always evokes for me. Your stitching is a triumph and I am in awe
One of my favorite childhood memories is of my mother reading to me from her beloved copy of House at Pooh Corner. Along with her copy of Alice in Wonderland, I have her copies of the two Pooh books and the two collections of poetry, When We were Very Young and Now We are Six. Your creation holds special meaning for me because when I was very young, I took a red crayon to this page, coloring in the red balloon! My mother was very unhappy, but I’m sure I innocently explained that a red balloon needed to be red! Your work is wonderful and thank you for bringing back a few nostalgic memories.
I love how you did the tree. Looking forward to the next trees. The little bees make me smile. Very well done!
I always loved Winnie! This is a great start to your series with lots of techniques used in its creation.
Love how you printed your leaves. What a great idea to let trees running through all your next quilts. Your handstitching of the text is very effective. Beautiful piece.
One of my favourite books, I love children books. Beautiful illustration . I love the colours and the fabrics. Such attention to details. Beautiful!
As Pooh said, nobody can be uncheered with a balloon. What an amazing and joyful composition. Love the 3D elements and the hand stitching. So whimsical. Well done!
