Sonia Ruiz – Time #
In this new art quilt series I will explore the passage of time using the 25 ton Aztec sun calendar and Frida Kahlo’s life journey. Each quilt will represent a different time or stage of her journey, and the enduring legacy of her art.
This first quilt represents Frida’s early years, her youth and innocence, the blue background is her casa azul in Coyoacán, Mexico with plants from her garden. The Aztec Sun Calendar represents her roots and the concept of ancestral time and some cultural imagery, like the butterfly and the sacred heart.
Materials: commercial fabrics, red ribbon, organza, raw edge appliqué, free motion quilting, thread sketching, French knots, vintage DMC embroidery floss for dirt, Saran wrap photo transfer of Frida at age 6 and Aztec calendar.

A really interesting subject for this series. I like the choice of colours and the details of the plants in the foreground.
