Elsy Menko – Time #1
I will look at this year’s theme ’time’ as found in song texts and poetry/literature.
This first piece is about Bob Dylan’s 1964 song “the times they are a-changin’”, a protest song and anthem of change for the era and the civil rights movement. The song came to represent the protest against the war in Vietnam (1955-1975).
This anti-war poster was produced by the Christchurch Mobilization Committee against the War in Vietnam in 1971.
Commercial and dyed cotton fabrics, machine piecing, free machine embroidery and hand stitching.

Wow, what a powerful image and strong idea behind, great idea and perfect execution. Great job!
A striking piece of work which fits Dylan’s words and the subject perfectly. well done!
Your quilt really touches my heart. The song was written more than 50 years ago but feels like it is about nowdays. Times are changing but history is repeating itself… The image is really striking, great job!
What a powerful piece ! Like Maryte it touches me, especially when you think that nothing changes … no evolution in men’s minds.
Bob Dylan is one of my great favorites, as he is for so many others, and his lyrics are a great way to start your series.
Amazing execution of a very powerful piece.
Great piece. Beautifully done. Great attention to details and very powerful message. Gorgeous!
A very powerful quilt. Great detail in the words and quilting.
A very interesting choice of subject. And as if nothing has changed, the years pass and the protests remain to this day. Wonderful piece.
I am in awe. Very interesting and powerful quilt. Can’t imagine this is 1971, as if nothing changes and history is repeating itself. Beautiful executed.
Wow, The Times They Are A Changin bought to life in fiber. A beautiful reminder that the struggle for a better world is still ongoing. A stunning and powerful piece of modern protest art. Well done.
