Sonia Ruiz – Decay #3

Abandoned canal pier

The colorful trajineras in Xochimilco’s canals are one of Mexico City’s top tourist attraction, but there’s another side of the canals that’s not as well known, or even seen, like the abandoned canals.

Materials: Landscape colors were selected from my scrap stash. These fabrics were torn into thin strips and then couched, leaving the threads and frayed edges, then I embellished with yute, oaxacan yarn, dyed gauze, tyvek and French knots

  1. What an expressive quilt and great use of fabrics and embellishments.

A great interpretation of an abandoned canal and its wonky landing stage. Your use of torn fabrics adds depth to the piece. Good colours, lovely work, well done.

  3. You have created so many nice details in this piece that bring it to life.
Interesting use of fabrics and materials.

I had to check out what trajineras are and learned something new! They look very beautiful.

The way that you have used raw edge fabrics gives a great feel to the disused canal and emphasise its forgotten state. I like the way that you have added the decrepit landing stage to further emphasise the feeling of decay. Great work

  6. With your technique you created a wonderful texture that goes so well with the chosen story. Well done!

  7. Great use of techniques and materials to create the image of the old abandoned canal. So much texture here in the use of stitch and embellishment.

  8. You’ve shown us so much interesting detail in this quilt. The textures you have created with embroidery is wonderful.

  10. The colors in the work are very good together. I am impressed that you use materials to express what you want us to feel in this work. Really excellent

  11. You used the perfect fabrics for this piece. Lovely how you used the raw edges. Great details.

  12. Love all the different layers of decay and a very rich texture they create, great job!

  13. I love the technique of many torn strips to create a landscape, fantastic texture! The decayed landing stage brings the message home. Nice stitching too. Hope to make a trip on the canals when we visit Mexico City, seems like a lot of fun. Beautiful piece, love that intense blue water.

  14. Another wonderful piece in your Xochimilco series. Beautiful use off all these different materials and techniques. Love the decayed landing stage. Very well done.
