Kaylene Maalste – Decay #4

Inspiration – Over time cloth wears out and decays, throughout time these old worn pieces of cloth have been used to mend clothes or even patched together for quilts and blankets. Decay #4 is to honour the many hours and time women have patched quilts using scraps of fabric.

Materials: Cotton cloth and embroidery thread.

  1. Your work is very close to my heart. I also love the colors and values of antique fabrics you used in this quilt creating balance between light and dark. Lovely piece.

  2. Such a beautiful collection of old fabrics.
The embroidered flower is a nice detail.

  3. A beautiful use of color. The embroidery is a perfect addition.

  4. I love this colour palette and the different fabrics you have used work well. The frayed edges give the piece a feel of something which has aged. The embroidered motifs tie the piece together, lovely work, well done.

You have chosen a nice harmony of red and beige, colours that were used when young girls were preparing their trousseau. It gives to your piece an outdated look. Good choice.

Your selection fabrics work really well together to give a feeling of comfort and cosiness that quilts made like this often have. The stitching emphasises the homeliness and pulls all of the elements together beautifully.

  7. A lovely tribute to the use of scraps and the art of patching. The colours are gentle and the stitching adds detail.

  8. This piece breathes time gone by. A lovely composition of the different old quilt scraps, the embroidery adds a nice touch. Great tribute!

  11. Using these old fabrics with the egdes is truly an honour the what women did in the early days. The addition of the embroidered motif gives this piece something special.

  12. Love your choice of old worn fabric pieces with a flower design and a harmonious color composition. The flower embroidery is a nice addition and goes well with the prints on the fabric.

  13. A beautiful tribute to all the women who spent hours mending. It looks like a piece of an authentic vintage, well loved quilt that has been patched up and loved again. Lovely worn, warm colors and beautiful stitching. Well done.
