Kaylene Maalste – Decay #3
Decay #3 was inspired by the decay of maybe a stone wall. Basically I was inspired by the concept of decay.
I cut holes in the top fabric to show the second layer, this represents the crumbling nature of stone. Then I place coffee dyed muslin/cheesecloth on the top to represent cobwebs that can be found in decaying ruins.
Materials – 100% cotton and embroidery thread.

This is wonderful Kaylene, I love it. There is a real sense of decay and abandonment and the cobwebs work really well. Great work!
I like the surface you created! The use of cheesecloth creates an exciting effect.
It is a great piece Kaylene ! just like looking into a microscope ! the different layers are working very well.
Love all the depth and texture you used in creating the eroded stone with the different techniques and fabric choices. Well done.
You have achieved a really interesting layered effect, with interest in each of the layers. I love the way that these represent the texture of eroding stone, and tell its story. Well done
Amazing creation of the decay itself! Lovely textures and the contrast of black and white makes a lasting impression. I wonder what’s next?
An excellent way to show a decaying wall. I like the cobwebs and the whole technique of layering.
The layers are very effective in showing decay. I also like that you have used cheesecloth for cobwebs and the coffee-dyed fabric. You are very innovative!
Great abstract work. I love the decayed fabric and the incredible hand quilting work. Fabulous colours. Bravo!
I really like the texture created between the fabrics. The two layers work great together.
You chose the perfect fabric to create this stone wall. The cheesecloth is really suggesting the cobwebs.
I just wonder how much time it took you to create all the cobwebs! A great piece and the layers work so well together. Cheesecloth always delivers, doesn’t it? Lov’it.
Wonderful piece, looks like a real decayed stone wall!
This is such a lovely piece. The contrast in colors and material works perfect to give the illusion of a decayed wall. Bravo!
