Kaylene Maalste – Decay #1

Inspiration for Decay #1 is from the dead and dying trees that I see on my travels in my area. Nature has created these trees for a purpose and that is to provided nesting spaces in the tree hollows for different bird species.

Materials: batik print from background and tree trunk. Various #5 pearl cottons for the branches and weathering on tree trunk. Pale blue embroidery cotton for background trees and bushes.

  1. Simple yet powerful image perfectly executed, great job!

  2. This tree has a very intriguing shape.
I love your stitching and all the details you have created with it both on the tree and on the background.

  3. Love it! The way you have constructed the tree trunk is really clever and it sits so well with the background undergrowth. Great work!

  4. I love the minimalism of your piece. The background stitching, the way you executed it, perfectly complements the tree.

The contrast of the dark tree on the white background is a very good choice. The hand stitching on the background complements the one on the tree trunk ! Beautiful !

  6. Your quilt is stunning in its minimal portrayal of the tree. The ghost-like images in the background add to the wonder of these dead trees.

  7. You have created a very stark and striking image against the pale background. Great hand stitching on both tree and background.

  8. Your subject speaks to me. The movement of the tree is like a dance. Very beautiful work.

  9. You have created a desolate and barren composition, yet it still conveys a sense of stillness and peace. Beautiful stitching, well done!

  10. I love the simplicity of the piece. The stitching is beautiful, especially the details in the background. The thought of a dead tree as home for many animals is a wonderful image. Well done.

I love old trees and you have really shown the shape and structure of this one, that looks almost architectural. The stitching is beautiful and I especially like the ghosts of trees in the background. Good work
