Helen Hazon – Decay #1

Inspiration – the fall and decay of leaves from deciduous trees.

When this theme was announced it was Autumn here in the UK. Bright colours were everywhere as our trees began to lose their leaves ready for their Winter rest. This was an instant inspiration for the focus of my series – what happens to all of the leaves?

I decided to begin in Autumn as the leaves change colour from shades of green to the yellows, oranges and reds that brighten this season. My first quilt in the series is a tree showing these changes. The 4 large leaves are from common trees in the landscape here – birch, oak, beech and sycamore. The leaf colours are all taken from real Autumn leaves that I photographed and printed onto transfer paper.

Fabrics are all cotton and stitching is in rayon.

Detail view:

I like the idea to show the evolution of decay in nature.

    Beautiful stitching as usual !

  5. Interesting take on the theme of the natural progression of the leaves, very clever. Lovely fall colors and stitching, well done.

  6. A lovely scene depicting the change of colors in autumn. The natural way all leaves must go. Very nice stitching, well done.

  7. Autumn is a good choice of a starting point as the leaves decay in such interesting colours, something that you have depicted with your design and use of materials.

  8. You can definitely see autumn in your work, with leaves of various colors.

  9. As always a very ballanced composition and clean stitching. I am excited to see what the future brings.
