Els Mommers – Decay #3
Artist statement: DECAY #3
In this piece I brought together all kind of different forms of “Decay”.
First there is the worn out wall paper, made from ice dyed cotton, covered with flour, overpainted and finally washed to remove the flour.
Damaged door made from a layer of felt, velours de panne, organza and a synthetic fleece, burned with a soldering iron and overpainted with some paint stick.
A broken glass window in the door
An old floor made with the gelli plate
Old couple outside on a somehow damaged bench and a very old man inside on a small stool. All appliqued.
Bare tree, machine embroidered.
Rusty bucket
Very old family pictures ( my deceased mom and dad and a great aunt) printed on fabric.
Broken clock
Worn out floormat from a weathered piece of embroidered jute. Made many, many years ago during my textile study.
The whole process can be seen on my blog:

The flour method is always very effective to make cracks in surfaces and it worked perfectly for the worn out paper wall. I love all the little details you put in this piece, especially the photos on the wall.
A great collection of objects creating a very effective scene and so many techniques. I love the impression that the whole piece gives of a glimpse of a bygone age. Great work, so much thought must have gone in to the planning!
What an exciting piece that tells us a story.
So many nice details and so many different materials.
I’ve tried the flour method with not so good results. I had great problems washing out the flour residue.
Great depiction of the process of time. The flour method is something I haven’t yet tried but probably will soon. Each element is handled with such a degree of thoughtfulness, making everything so vivid.
Your creations are always a school for me. So many interesting techniques in one wonderful little piece. I am truly appreciative.
