Caro Higgs – Time #1

Sands of time

For this series I am basing my pieces on citations/quotes about time. This first piece is using a verse of the poem “A Psalm of Life” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882 ).

Sands of time is an interesting subject because the patterns of sand on the beach change with the tides, ie twice a day and the intricate patterns that are either randomly or intentionally made during the six hours of low tide are soon washed away as the water rises.

This piece is an abstract depiction; on old linen sheeting I printed random items I found on the beach and boot prints in blue pigment and then overpainted with yellow natural earth pigment. The verse of the poem was added with ink and then I over-stitched by machine and finally hand stitched bare footprints to accentuate the footsteps and give texture to the untouched sand.

  1. Very intersting concept and the texture of your beach is simply amazing, brilliant!

  2. The poem has a deep meaning, and your quilt reflects on it perfectly. To me it looks like if you touch it, the patterns in sand will get ruined. Perfection!

  3. I love how the quilting has given texture to the surface of the fabric. The sand is so real that we want to touch it !

  4. What a beautiful poem you have as inspiration!

Your stitching is so intricate. I especially love the shoe prints.

Great concept for your first of the series. What intricate work in the sand and yes it will be washed away and constantly renewed. Great attention to details and I love the linen, it really gives the feel of sand. Beautiful!

  6. Fantastic, I have always be intrigued with sand patterns, your technique brings the poem to life. Bravo

  7. Beautiful and so complex work, especially since you used one canvas on which you built the subject. perfect.

  8. What a beautiful texture, I LOVE it. The blue footprints are such a wonderful part of the whole composition. Very meaningful poem. Awesome.

  9. Your composition beautifully captures the essence of Longfellow’s poem. Such meticulous and intricate quilting creating so much texture and visual interest. Absolutely stunning work!

  10. Great concept of the changes throughout time. It seems very realistic.

  11. What a lovely idea and the words of the poem are so apt for this subject. I love the way that you have included the ‘footprints’ and the colour is perfect for the sand. Great work

  12. This really does look like footprints in sand – many textures created by clever stitching. An interesting approach to the theme.

  13. You created a very nice texture. I love the footprints. The poem fits perfectly.
