Bella Kaplan – Decay #5

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 by Bedouin shepherds and archaeologists in the caves of Qumran, near the Dead Sea. These ancient manuscripts, over 2,000 years old, were written between the 3rd century BCE and the 1st century CE. They include biblical texts, apocryphal writings, and unique compositions of the Qumran community. Written mainly on parchment, with some on papyrus  , the scrolls provide a rare glimpse into the religious and social life of the Second Temple period.
In this work, I also used handmade paper that I made a screen printed, and a black cotton fabric  background, machine quilted .

  1. Great choice of subject beautifully executed. Lovely work, the simplicity says it all!

  2. It is a nice addition to your series reflecting on the history of your region. Use of paper in quilts always intriguise me but I have no courage to do that. Maybe, some day, following your example…

You have created a paper which looks exactly how I would imagine the parchment to look, and the stitching is perfectly executed. A great interpretation

  4. Well done I like the simplicity and choice for materials.

  5. The paper you created is just how it should be to looklike old parchment. A simple but effective composition.

  6. Using paper was a great idea for this particular piece.
This is very powerful in its simplicity.

  7. Your hand made paper looks really like parchment.

The simplicity of the composition makes your piece stronger.

  8. I love your handmade paper with the Hebrew text. It is a very subtle piece that covers an import part of history. Very well done.

  9. The paper you used really looks just like the parchment of the scrolls! The Hebrew writing a sure give-away of what this is. Simple and very effective. Well done!
