Ann Turley – Decay #5

Stacked Enamel Plates Full

Stacked Enamel Plates Detail

It’s interesting how things evolve. Yes, I’ve titled this Enamel Plates, but when I completed it, it reminded me more of decaying mushrooms as seen from below. The fabrics are two commercial prints, both have been painted over with acrylic paint to give the effect of age and rust. the white overlays were jaggedly cut to add to the aged look of the edges. It is machine-quilted.

  1. This certainly has an aged look to it, first glance I saw a pile of wood! Good mix of colours and neat stitching.

I saw a layer of mushrooms when I first saw this piece, so it’s interesting how the viewer can interpret the image. I like the way that you have used raw edges on the white rims of the plates and used the stitching to emphasise their shapes. Good work

  3. I was intrigued when I saw your design and did think of mushrooms but I like the idea of enamel plates, so I am interpreting it both ways as well. It is refreshing when a design challenges the mind for an interpretation.

  4. You have shown the process of decay so well it doesn’t even matter what the decaying things in your quilt are. But it creates the mood of decay for sure. Well done!

  5. I like the composition of the smaller ones in the back.

  6. What a fun piece that allows for many interpretations.
I see enamel plates. I see mushrooms. And first and foremost I see bracket fungus growing on a tree.
The color of the background fabric is interesting and provides a nice contrast.

  7. At first sight I saw mushrooms ! It is very interesting to see how commercial fabrics can be changed when painted ! Well done !

  8. Your brown plates are a lovely color contrast with the blue green background. The raw edges of the plates definitely creates the decay mood.

  9. My first impression of fungus growing on a tree was reinforced by the jaggedy edges. Great colors, lovely contrast of the brown against the bright green/blue background. It definitely has an air of decay about it.

Mushrooms is what I see in this quilt and I love it. Great colours and composition. Bravo!

  11. To be honest, before I saw what you wrote, I thought these were mushrooms growing in a cluster. A beautiful composition, as is the use of color.

  12. Like Iina said, there are many interpretations. I asked my husband what he saw and he said lots of pecan pies! Haha he made me laugh, I told him he must be hungry! I also see a cluster of mushrooms. Lovely composition and choice of fabrics. Well done.

  13. An interesting design that has so many different interpretations. My first impression was of bracket fungus on a dead tree. Good choice of colours and clever use of the fabrics to create depth.

  14. I would call it a success if there is so many ways for interpretation yet everybody sees the ageing and decay 🙂
