Ann Turley – Decay #1

RUSTED KEYHOLE, PEELING PAINT

For my first attempt with Decay, I’ve chosen to portray an old wooden door with a rusty keyhole and peeling paint all around. It is a very simple piece but I feel it is effective. The rust is created with a diluted mixture of burnt sienna and yellow paints. Same for the yellowed paint around the door frame. More yellow, way less burnt sienna. A scrap of gold lame worked well for the brass door knob. Materials used were batiks and commercial cottons, lame and acrylic paints. I’ve used a simple spaced line as the quilting motif.

  1. You are right – simple and effective piece. I like the polished knob contrasted with dark, rich and unknown history of the doors (or former inhabitants).

  2. Excellent fabric choice, especially for the door knob and the key hole. Simple quilting is perfect for your quilt, it doesn’t disturb anything, there is enough of texture in your fabrics. Very well done!

  3. This is a great example of seeing the beauty in something that at first glance doesn’t look that nice.
    Good choice of fabrics.

  4. Sometimes simple is best and this is the case here. Great choice of fabrics a very striking piece, well done.

This is a really effective way of portraying the door, and the choice of colours and fabrics are perfect to convey the age and deterioration of the structures. Really well done

  14. Love how you’ve created so much depth and detail in your closeup view of the aging door. Your colors and fabric choices are spot on conveying decay. Well done.
