Ann Turley – Time #1

HIEROGLYPHICS

For our 2026 theme of Time, I have chosen communication. This first block shows two images I photographed at Al Karnak, a temple in Luxor, Egypt. The rought-cut edges are a reference to the papyrus substrate, Materials used were batiks, hand-dyed fabric and a commercial cotton. It was machine quilted with a stylized papyrus pattern.

The honey bee and the Ankh are both common hieroglyphs seen at this temple site. The bee proclaims the title of King of Upper and Lower Egypt while the Ankh on the right is a symbol of life. The Ankh also shows a relationship between life, immortality, death, and the rituals of death.

  1. Very interesting subject. Love the simplicity of design and the color palette, well done!

  2. A really interesting choice of subject and a great beginning with this piece. The stitching really compliments the simplicity of the motifs. Lovely work;
