Sonia Ruiz – Decay #4
In Xochimilco you can experience a serene eco boat ride on a traditional trajinera. You will be surrounded by lush landscapes with sightings of wildlife like pelicans and the endangered axolotl while also noticing the severe decay due to urbanization and pollution. This is my interpretation of a picture I took while I was visiting last month.
Materials: confetti technique, commercial fabrics scraps, raw edge appliqué, tulle, jute, gauze, tyvek, acrylic paint, hand embroidery and free motion quilting

It is interesting you can find new things to explore in the same surroundings. It leaves me speechles how you are able to combine so many different things to make a solid piece of art. It was worth waiting!
I had the same thought as Maryte: It was worth waiting for. So nice how you use the confetti technique to be albe to use a lot of tiny, colored pieces. I love the reflection in the water.
A great addition to your series highlighting the decay of such an interesting area. Great colours and detail, lovely work.
A truly beautiful addition to your series.
Love your use of the confetti technique – something I’ve never really tried.
I am amazed how you’ve captured the reflection of the trees in the water.
I had to check out what kind of creature an axolotl is. Very interesting!
O how II would love to experience once more a boat ride in the Xochimilco canals. Your pieces are so realistic, but also evoke a dreamy atmosphere.
Such a pity to learn about the pollotion and the decay.
I am in awe of your confetti-technique as well as the reflection in the water.
Another beautiful addition to your series. I just LOVE it.
Such a wondeful, detailed piece. I am amazed at how you’ve been able to portray the new with the old. Great use of color.
Can’t wait to experience such a boat ride. Great use of the confetti technique. Your piece breathes calm and serenity. The reflection in the water is awesome! Had never heard of an axolotl, what a fascinating animal. Beautiful piece.
A great scene and I certainly appreciate all your work in this quilt. Bravo
Love the richness of nature so vivid in your pieces!
