Sonia Ruiz – Decay #1
Forgotten graves
In southern Mexico City, a gritty working-class neighborhood gives way to the famous canals of Xochimilco, the last remnants of a vast water transport system built by the Aztecs. It’s renowned for its network of canals and artificial islands called “chinampas”, which are essentially floating gardens dating back to pre-Hispanic times, offering a unique glimpse into the Aztec agricultural practices and making it a popular tourist destination for boat rides on colorful “trajineras” (gondolas) through the canals while experiencing the rich cultural traditions of the region. The atmosphere is festive, especially on weekends. In this challenge I will give you a tour of the old, dark and forgotten. There’s just something really thrilling about a place with a dark and mysterious past.
Materials: commercial fabrics, raw edge appliqué, confetti technique, tulle, jute, acrylic paint, free motion quilting

What an interesting story beautifully illustrated, can’t wait for more!
A very fascinating piece full of mystery.
An exciting approach to the challenge.
I love all the details you have created.
An interesting take on the subject. You have managed to imply a sadness to the area with the choice of colours and fabrics. Great work, well done.
I truly appreciate you to introducing us to the forgotten past of your country. As to your piece, I love the confetti and added fibers, also the colors truly represents decay.
The whole scene reflects abandonment and oblivion ! beautiful and sad at the same time … I love the confetti and fibers, their use is very effective.
Wow, this is fabulous! I can almost feel the atmosphere of the area. It seems as though the plantlife is in the process of overtaking the ruins. Very nice!
The (soon to be) overgrown remnants of this Aztec canal system look quite mysterious to me. A fascinating way to deal with the subject. The confetti and added fibers are very effective.
Fantastic interpretation with thread and material of the remnants of the past.
The story is very interesting , it’s a shame I can’t be there and see it. I love the details in the work and the combination of colors.
This is wonderfully atmospheric showing the decline of a place over time and it’s slow reclamation by nature.
I love all the materials you weave into your quilts. So rich in textures and colours. Great attention to details, stitching and composition. Bravo!
I love the way that you have worked the overgrown vegetation, and the way it parts to show the old structure. This a great story and I agree that the mysterious nature is so interesting. You have made a rich and detailed piece to depict this
So well done: how nature takes over the ruïnes. I love the confetti technique and how you used other materials.
This piece fills me with nostalgia. So many good memories. Such beautiful surrounding with also a very dark side. Very nice executed. Can’t wait for the rest. Bravo!
