Maryte Collard – Decay #5
Colour Fastness
In Decay #5, I explored how colorfast textiles used in clothing or crafts are when exposed over time to washing, light, rubbing, or perspiration. I chose a pink T-shirt, a blue work coat, and an embroidered wall hanging. The wall hanging not only faded but also showed wear in the wool yarn embroidery, which broke apart and revealed the background color once hidden behind flowers, leaves, and letters. I added hand-appliquéd flowers in two shades of blue and pink: the blues came from the well-worn garden work coat, and the pinks from the same T-shirt. Both items were originally of the solid color but overtime faded in a few shades of blue or pink.
To maintain the style of the Decay quilts, I hand-stitched the background with long Kantha-style stitches.

I am impressed by the lengths you have gone to for this subject, decaying fabric and fading colours are so apt. Great colour palette and stitching, lovely work.
Clever idea to degrade your existing fabrics to show the process of decay. They have given a beautifully muted colour palette as well as demonstrating how the deterioration happens. Lovely work
An interesting choice for decay, as I have just weeded out T-shirts that have seen better times. Well done
It is known that sun and textile work do not go together. I love your hand stitching. The flowers and the background Wonderful.
You did an interesting experiment and used that perfectly for this piece.
What a fascinating way to reuse textiles.
As always, very beautifully done with many delicate details.
I am impressed by the fact that you have chosen to decay your own fabrics for this series ! Your embroidery stand out well on the muted background.
In this piece I just recognize how everything, and especially textiles, just fades and desintregate so fast here in the tropics.
Love how the Kantha stitches runs as a red line through your entire series.
Fascinating that you ‘decayed’ your own fabrics and reused them here. Great palette of colors and wonderful embroidery. Love your kantha stitching.
I love your experimentation with decaying fabric. You created such a beautiful piece. Love the embroidery and the hand quilting. Beautiful!
yours is a clever interpretation of the theme. It is fascinating how items decay before our eyes and we barely notice it. I love your use of color.
Love all the textile experimentation you’ve been doing, very original and clever. The hand embroidery and the all over Kantha style stitching is beautiful. Well done.
I like that you have decayed your own fabrics for your series. This piece is very effective and the hand stitching is a great finishing touch.
Love your scientific approach and artful conclusions.
