Helen Hazon – Decay #4

Inspiration – the naturally occurring radioactive decay of unstable atoms.

For the second half of the Decay challenge I have again looked to my science background. This time I’ve chosen the world of Physics. The 3 remaining quilts will illustrate the 3 types of radioactive atomic decay – alpha, beta and gamma. This first quilt of the 3 focuses on alpha decay, the least energetic and so the least damaging of the 3 types. Certain large, unstable atomic nuclei emit alpha particles as a way of becoming stable. Each alpha particle consists of 2 protons and 2 neutrons and is emitted from its parent nucleus together with a small amount of energy. There is a lot more science involved in the properties and uses of this type of decay but I’ve left it basic.

The materials are all cotton with some stitching in rayon.

  1. Wow, very unexpected topic but very good to relearn what has been forgotten. Your work looks very clean and well organized. I wonder how it is going to look like when much more energy is going to be released?

  2. What an interesting and unusual subject choice. I love the way that you manage to demonstrate your scientific knowledge as quilts! Lovely work.

  3. This was a surprise after the previous pieces inspired by trees!
This is a very interesting and intriguing approach to “decay”.
    Beautifully done work.

Completely unexpected subject and also completely new for me ! As usual your work is beautifully excecuted.

  5. What an unsusal approach to our theme, and thank you for the lesson in physics. Your work is clean and crisp and beautifully done. Great!

I like the simplicity of the design and its clean and defined nature, which perfectly depicts the alpha decay. This is a great way to interpret the subject.

  7. I am fascinated by the scientific knowledge you share with us and curious to know what comes next. You highlighted what you wanted the viewer to see, with the background and explanation in the work helping to understand.

  8. Fascinating and unexpected subject. A great lesson in physics. Execution immaculate as always!

  9. Like how you have incorporated science into decay, love the minimalistic approach to your theme and colour.

What an interesting concept. Love the science behind it. Clean and perfect stitching. Bravo!

  11. This lesson in physics is totaly new for me, or I didn’t pay enough attention.

I like how you made this clear to me.

  12. Such an unexpected and completely new way to look at Decay.

I am always amazed and in awe of your beautiful executed work.

  13. What an intriguing and interesting concept to combine your knowledge of science and art. Very clean and well thought out composition. Well done.

  14. Wow, what an interesting change of subject! Love the clear and simple design.
