Helen Hazon – Decay #3

Inspiration – the fall and decay of leaves from deciduous trees.

In this third and final quilt about decay of leaves I have moved on to the results of the process rather than the process itself. So here we see the return of green to the same scene. The tree has new leaves, there is new grass and new flowers growing. These are all possible because the old leaves have decayed and released chemicals back into the soil that enable new growth – the cycle of life continues.

All fabrics and construction threads are cotton. I have used Inktense pencils and surface stitching is in rayon.

An interesting take on the subject and I like the way that you have completed the cycle. Immaculate stitching, as always, love the detail of the flowers – great work!

  2. Like how you have ended the series with new life coming back to the trees after the decaying leaves have fallen.

  3. It’s so nice that you show us how new life is a result of the inevitable decay in nature. I like the vibrant colors of the leaves on the tree and the transparent leaves on the ground are a nice and exciting detail.

Despite the theme your piece is very peaceful. I like the fact that you show decay but also new life in the same time.

  5. A perfectly stitched composition describing the crucial role of how the decomposition of the fallen leaves contribute to new life and overall biodiversity. Well done.

A lovely way to demonstrate that decay is part of the circle of life, and that in the end it gives the promise of regeneration. Well worked and beautifully stitched

  7. In your quilts I laways look for hand stitching and it never disappoints me. I love the idea of rebirth that isn’t possible in the path chosen by me. Great!

  8. It’s fascinating how you have taken us through thr life cycle and seasons in the life of a tree. Death and deacy afre often necessary to bring forth new growth.

Fantastic life circle journey of the leaves, the old nourishing the new, the decay bringing life. Great attention to details and embroidery. Bravo!

  10. I love the continuity in this work to the two that preceded it. From the shedding to the new growth. Excellent

  11. I love your idea of Decay. Sure it is a part of the circle in nature. Perfect embroidery of the flowers.

  12. I love the quiet elegance of your pieces and this one is no exception, great work!

  13. A lesson in the wonders of the cycle of life. Lovely piece and perfect stitching. Especially love those small yellow flowers (dandelions?).

  14. As always beautiful handstitched embroidery. Lovely way to depict decay transforming into new growth.
