Genevieve Guadalupe – Decay #6

Late Fall

The late fall season is probably the most reminiscent of decay in nature. The days are short and the sunlight dim. The wind and rain are undressing the trees, the leaves have lost their vibrant colours and are blending into the colour of the earth. Starting the process of decomposition, creating nourishment for the mushrooms, for future trees to grow strong. Getting ready to go dormant for the winter, calling us to slow down, to turn within to take time to nourish our soul.

Materials and technique: repurposed cotton fabrics, tea bags, real leaves preserved, printmaking inks, cotton batting, poly thread, embroidery floss, cheese cloth. Intaglio and block printmaking, monoprints, preserving of leaves, machine pieced, machine quilted, hand embroidered.

  1. I do feel the sense of decay that you described. The choice of colours in the background make your quilt sing.

  2. Late fall indeed, good job!

  3. A great end to your series, the muted colours and dense quilting combine give the sense of decaying plant life. great work!

  4. Wonderful finale for your series. I love the hand stitching and use of natural leaves. Well done!

  5. I love the gentle way in which you have depicted the breakdown and last of the life of autumn leaves and the way that this hides the promise of new life to come. The printing, preserved leaves and stitching work really well

  6. There is a kind of fragility in all your pieces, so also in this one. A beautiful concluding piece to your series.

  7. I really appreciate the amount of materials and technique you used in the work. The color works well with the subject you chose.

  8. A lovely end to your series. The background colours set off the leaves and the leaves are varied through your use of different techniques. Lovely.

  9. The faded and delicate colors, the prints on the background are a great addition to your quilt. The use of real leaves depicts the fragility of nature
