Els Mommers – Decay #5

ARTIST STATEMENT: DECAY #5

In this series I wanted to use different surface-techniques for each piece.

This time I started with putting tape on fabric and painting over it several times.

For more depth I stamped over it with a different color and added some marble spray.

It was still not what I intended and I was very happy to find on Youtube a tutorial on paper

lace netting. This paper lace is placed over the whole background and free motion quilted.

For the shutters I painted a blue A4 paper. The paper copy has been covered with some gelmedium and put on top of a commercial fabric, also covered with the medium.

After soaking and removing I got the old look that I intended to use for the window frames.

For the old lady I used an internet picture  I had traced already a while ago. It was made into a “paper doll” as described in “Create landscape quilts” from Meri Henriques Vahl.

It is appliqued on top of the window still.

The old stones are painted on fabric and appliqued as are the falling leaves. Another form of decay.

Cement  in between  the stones is freemotion quilted.

The whole process can be seen on hhtp://kunamola.blogspot.com

What a lot if different techniques you have used to create the surface you wanted, and it has worked really well. I love the way that the window frame appears so aged and worn, and the oldlcade peering out gives it realism. Beautiful

  3. Your ability to use so many techniques is always amazing and the result is a great story. Bravo

  4. Your knowledge and ability to use so many different techniques makes my head spin. Your quilt tells the sad story of decay and goes well with other quilts in your series. Bravo.

  5. I love the paper lace netting on the background. I am amazed how you did the windows: why making it easy for yourself, ha, ha. Beautiful piece!

  6. Such a fascinating process that led to this beautiful piece. Lots of nice details – especially the little face in the window.

  7. What I prefer in your piece is the decayed blue window ! just so realistic ! and of course the little face peering out is moving. Well done !

  8. That decayed blue window frame is just wonderful, as is the face of the woman looking out. So many techniques used. Well done!
