Chantal Guillermet- Decay #5 : Poverty

Decay is not only caused by abandonment, wars and destruction. Poverty can also be the cause.

I will deal with this theme in the two quilts Decay 5 and 6, using 2 photos taken in villages in India during my last trip.

When you have to fight every day to survive, you don’t have the money to maintain what surrounds you. Little by little, everything deteriorates, and you can’t even see it anymore, because you have to concentrate on what’s really vital.

But sometimes, in the midst of all this desolation, an object stands out, as in the case of the red cloth by the door, which must have been hiding something…

  1. A great approach to decay, it is certain that it happens all the time and often hidden. Great to be able to use photographic evidence. Beautiful colour choices.

  2. You chose a very important topic for the two last quilts of this series. The one people like us, living middle class lives, seldom think of. It is sad and seeing something standing out in those surroundings gives hope.

You are quite right that poverty is also a cause of decay and you have used lightness of touch to highlight this beautifully. The red cloth by the door makes the starkness of the surroundings all the more poignant

  4. A beautiful story telling quilt. Something that we have to acknowledge and not be judgmental about. Well done

  5. A good combination of fabrics and color to express what you saw. The objects you added give the atmosphere of the place.

  6. A good approach of Decay. Very well excecuted. The red piece of fabric is a very special detail. Nice!

  7. Another moving piece and an interesting take on “decay”.
Love the contrast the red fabric creates. Very beautiful stitching.
The colors you use are so interesting – and so “you”.

  8. What an interesting idea to show how poverty can cause Decay. It is, as you say, often hidden. I love the decoration on the wall in contrast with the person and the red cloth. Well done.

  9. Both the red cloth and the wall decoration are eye catchers in this sad and moving story. Beautifully executed piece in very delicate colors.

Beautiful quilt! Great interpretation of the theme. The colours of the fabric are very harmonious and the red cloth captures the attention. Bravo!

  11. An unusual approach to Decay, one that most wouldn’t consider. I’m impressed at the way a small bit of red fabric can add joy to a difficult life. The detailed stitching gives life to the composition.

  12. Love all the details and fabric choices in your composition. It’s amazing how the pop of color like a small red piece of cloth can make you feel hope amidst the decay. Well done.

  13. A very effective piece of work. I’ve seen many similar scenes in India and this really captures the atmosphere. The red cloth is a lovely detail.

  14. Great capture of this kind of decay and so very true idea behind, well done!
