Chantal Guillermet – Decay #4

Decay N° 4 : What is left …

Time is not always responsible for destruction and decay. Man also plays an important part. After wars, he leaves destruction and desolation in his wake. Occasionally, a few objects emerge intact…

They bear witness to the fact that there was once life here. Little by little, nature will reclaim its rights.

This is what I wanted to illustrate in this quilt.

The background is made up of tea bags glued to muslin with gel medium, then printed. The various elements were part of my treasures … rusty fabric on which we could make out a silhouette of a bottle (by chance!), eco-print on canvas, collagraph on gelli plate for the jug, fragment of silkscreen bought from Els Van Baarle a long time ago …

Free motion quilting and hand embroidery.

  1. The collection of the elements, once forgotten, included into this quilt add to your story of human impact on decay, of loss and rebirth. The design and colors to me are easily recognizable as your true style. Perfect!

  2. A great mix of fabrics which all blend together to give the idea of an aged image. Lovely work.

  3. Love all the details in your composition – and especially the rusty bottle. The way you made the background is very interesting.
This made me remember a teapot my father had. It was the only thing from his childhood home that had survived two bombings/fires during World War II in Finland.

  4. I love your background and wouldn’t have ever guessed it it printed teabags. All of the details are interesting and draw the viewer in for closer examination. The color placement perfectly leads one’s eye through the composition. Very nice.
