Caro Higgs – Decay #5: Meadow Saxifrage

Inspiration from a photo of a Meadow Saxifrage seed head seen while out walking.

The flower has gone and the plant is on the way to decaying, the colour has disappeared and soon the seeds will also leaving nothing except the empty stalks. The seed head is more rigid than that of the dandelion but the formation is much the same and I love its fragility and transparency. Once a plant arrives at this stage there is no way back!

The idea was to create something lightweight on something more solid to demonstrate more contrast. I used old relatively tight woven linen sheeting coloured with earth pigments as the back drop. The seed head has a very light silk non-woven textile added in layers which are held in place with machine stitching. Lines were drawn on to both the seed head and on the background in paint. The background was then stitched to create added texture.

  7. Awesome piece. The very fragile transparant seedhead in contrast wih the darker and more heavier background is a feast for the eyes. I just LOVE it.

  8. Wow, what a magnificent piece! You have achieved such delicacy by the use of the right material to get to wonderful transparency. The stitching is beautiful too. The contrast between the earthy colors and the white transparent material is what makes this piece outstanding.

Beautiful interpretation of the theme. I love the layers you have created and your choice of fabric texture. A clear example that the decaying flower sends out all the seeds that will be new lives. Bravo!
