Caro Higgs – Decay #3

Hydrangeas

Inspiration; a photo of hydrangea seed heads.

Keeping to the idea of decay in nature which is so natural really intrigues me. The shape of the square hydrangea seed heads beginning to decay was the starting point for this work. The complete shapes are made of abaca tissue (tissuetex) which I painted and then appliquéd on to a commercial fabric which had been machine quilted. The large head which is on the way to total decay was made with silk voile which was painted and layered, machine stitched and then partially attached to backing. The idea was to create differing layers and thicknesses and the idea of transparency interested me, I haven’t really achieved what I had imagined but time ran out!

  1. Great interpretation of decaying leaves and I like how you have juxtaposition the leaves against the green backgound.

The lace effect on the bottom petal is magnificent and the colour of the abaca tissue is a perfect reproduction of dried flowers.
This piece deserves to be seen ‘in real life’!

  3. Such beautiful work.
Our pieces don’t always turn out as planned. But I think you’ve achieved some nice transparency, especially at the bottom.

  4. I think you did a really effective piece depicting the dry and decaying seed heads creating a lacey and delicate composition. Well done.

I think you have captured the various states of decay of the hydrangea, in particular the lacy effect. The use of abaca tissue is a perfect way to introduce transparency. Well done

  6. The combination of the bright leaves, some of which are spicy, against the green background that symbolizes growth works well together. I love the lacy effect you create.

  7.   Excellent choice of materials for depicting decay so beautifully.  I also love the lace of deintegrating leaf. Very well done!

  8. The ageing flower parts look good against the green background. Great detail in the stitching and in the distressing of the “leaf” in the foregroundd.

  9. Very nice decaying leaves and contrast of color. I particulary like the lacy effect of the bottom leaf. I don’t know abaca tissue but it worked very well.

  10. I love the lacy effect you have achieved, it is very realistic.

I love the effect you have achieved on the decaying leaves. Such attention to details and beautiful quilting. Bravo!

  12. I love hydrangea! You created a lovely piece with just the right colors of the transparant decayed flower leaves.

  13. Great idea to place the decaying leaves against a green background emphasizing the contrast between decay and regrowth. Impressive how you have achieved the lacy effect I the bottom leaf. Beautiful.

  14. I was fascinated by dried hydrangeas myself and I think you really got it!
